Backlinks from Guestbooks

There are quite a few ways to get backlinks, but unmoderated guestbooks are often overlooked or thought of as an ancient link building method.  Believe it or not, guestbooks are still around and many of them have the cherished pagerank so many webmasters seek.

First, the key to discovering guestbooks is to look for a search operator that will help you find plenty of them.  Searching for “sign guestbook” at Google will return a large list of guestbooks.  Or a search of “guestbook.html” will also return a list of guestbooks once you get past the first page.  For most, it’s probably easier to search for specific guestbook scripts (ones known to not be moderated).  Below are some search phrases I used.

“PBL GuestBook v 1.32″
“PHP Guestbook Script”
“OOApp”
“iBWd Guestbook 1.0″

I admit that backlinks from guestbooks is pretty much web -1.0.  But the fact that many of these guestbooks have pagerank and are often abandoned, I can see why there still is interest in these backlinks.

The problem is that many guestbooks do not offer the ability to post your own anchor text.  Additionally, some guestbooks get hammered by auto post bots that advertise some pretty raunchy stuff.

During the research and writing of this article, I quickly located around a dozen guestbooks.  These guestbooks have pageranks from NR to 3.  If you would like to view this small sample list, click here to download them.

Commenting on a guestbook in itself is not a questionable link building method.  However, actively seeking out guestbooks to submit your link in mass is questionable.  Use this link building method at your own risk.
